On 7 October, Microsoft opened pre-orders for Surface Laptop Ultra. Availability begins on 16 October through selected retailers, with a starting price of $2,599. Microsoft's announcement gives no Swedish price, and configurations vary by market.
The laptop uses Nvidia's RTX Spark and can be configured with up to 128 GB of unified memory. This means the processor and graphics hardware share the same memory pool. Microsoft says the top configuration can run AI models with as many as 120 billion parameters locally. Parameters are the values a model has learned; more parameters usually require more memory.
Running locally can reduce dependence on the cloud and keep some data on the computer. It does not mean that every Copilot task will work offline. Microsoft describes a hybrid system in which harder tasks may still be sent to the cloud.
Price is the clear limitation. Reuters reports that the top version costs $5,899, while the base model has much less memory. The important question before buying is therefore not only whether a machine is called an “AI PC”, but which models and apps can actually run locally with the memory configuration you choose.
